Which vehicle is right for your Malawi trip?

Rental Guides · 11 Oct 2026 · Ambassador Car Hire

The right vehicle depends on where you are going, how many of you there are and how much luggage you carry. Our fleet is grouped exactly as on our tariff, so it is easy to compare.

Staying in town: Groups A and C. For meetings in Lilongwe or Blantyre and trips on tarred roads, a sedan is all you need. The Toyota Auris (Group A, from $50 a day) and the Toyota Corolla Altis (Group C, from $65 a day) are automatic, comfortable and economical.

Adventure for two: Group D. The Suzuki Jimny (from $75 a day) is small but a proper 4x4, ideal for a couple heading off the beaten track. Add a roof tent and it becomes a camper.

Families and national parks: Group E. The Nissan X-Trail, Toyota RAV4 and Haval Jolion (from $85 a day) give you higher ground clearance and room for luggage. The X-Trail has seven seats.

Rough roads and heavy loads: Group H. The Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara double cabs (from $100 a day) carry five people plus gear in the back, and are a favourite with overlanders and project teams.

Comfort on long distances: Groups I and J. The Nissan Patrol, Nissan Terra and Toyota Fortuner are seven-seat executive 4x4s (from $130 a day for Group I, $145 for Group J), built for long days on the road.

Groups: Group K. Our Toyota Hiace minibus (from $130 a day) is always hired with one of our drivers, so your group can sit back and enjoy the trip.

Going solo: the motorbike. The Yamaha DT 175 (from $35 a day) is the cheapest way to explore for one or two riders.

Every price includes 200 km a day, third-party insurance, passenger liability and tax. Rent for 14 days or more and the daily rate drops.
