Crossing the border with a rental car

Travel Tips · 20 Oct 2026 · Ambassador Car Hire

Many of our guests combine Malawi with a neighbouring country, for example South Luangwa in Zambia. You can take an Ambassador vehicle across the border, as long as you tell us when you book.

How it works

  1. Tick “Crossing a border” when you book and tell us which country.
  2. We prepare the papers the vehicle needs to leave Malawi.
  3. You collect the vehicle with its documents and drive as planned.

What it costs

  • A cross-border fee of $75 per rental.
  • The usual daily rate, with 200 km a day included; extra kilometres are charged at the rate for your vehicle group.
  • Border and road charges of the other country are paid by the driver.

Good to know

  • Book early: we need advance notice to prepare the papers.
  • Bring your driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit if you are visiting from abroad, and your passport.
  • A 4x4 from Group E upwards is the comfortable choice for long distances and gravel roads.
  • Prefer not to drive? Add one of our drivers for $10 a day plus $35 for each night away.
