Camping in Malawi with a roof tent

Travel Tips · 17 Oct 2026 · Ambassador Car Hire

A 4x4 with a roof tent turns your rental into a camper: sleep off the ground, set up in minutes and wake up wherever the road takes you. We fit the gear before you collect the vehicle, so it is ready when you arrive.

Sleep

  • Roof tent: $15 a day (needs a roof rack, $5 a day)
  • Pitch tent for 4 people: $10 a day
  • Bedding (sleeping bag, pillow and pillow case): $7.50 a day
  • Towels: $0.50 a day

Cook and eat

  • Gas fridge with gas cylinder: $12.50 a day
  • Cooler box: $5 a day
  • Single gas stove: $5 a day
  • Pots and pans, chair, table, plate and cup: $1 a day each
  • Cutlery: $0.50 a day per person

On the road

  • Jerry cans for petrol or diesel, hand air pump, siphon, jump cables, tow rope, torch, shovel, axe, tool box and an extra spare tyre: $1 a day each
  • 5 ft trailer: $15 a day
  • Baby seat (up to 18 months): $5 a day

Example: a couple’s set-up of roof rack, roof tent, 2 × bedding, fridge, stove, 2 chairs and a table comes to $55.50 a day.

Which vehicle? The Suzuki Jimny suits a couple; the Hilux and Navara double cabs carry the most gear; the X-Trail, Terra and Fortuner suit families.

Add gear in step 5 of your car booking, or add it later with your booking reference. Damaged equipment is deducted from the deposit.
